Saunth (Ginger Powder) Tea

Today we’ll discuss Saunth (Ginger Powder) and how we can harness the power/properties that it offers. Although you will find a lot of information about the benefits of Saunth, we will discuss the unique benefit of this spice here today.

Saunth, when consumed in a specific way, helps relieve various cough related ailments. For example, if fresh ginger juice (8-10 drops) mixed with a teaspoon full of sugar syrup helps in relieving from tough dry cough. Likewise, when Saunth (Ginger powder) is consumed with or as a tea enhances our immune system. It reduces and eventually eliminates strong seasonal allergy symptoms. It strengthens our upper respiratory system and soothes our lungs by melting dry cough accumulated in our lungs naturally. Here’s how you can make a delicious Tea with Saunth. Often, in Indian culture fresh Ginger is used but we are seeking specific benefit so we are using Saunth (Ginger powder) instead. Believe me, there’s a big difference.

Saunth Tea
Ingredients:

  • ½ teaspoon regular tea leaves (do not use flavored tea)
  • ½  teaspoon dry Saunth (Ginger Powder)
  • milk to taste
  • 200 ml of regular water
  • Sugar to taste

How to prepare Saunth Tea?
You all know how to make tea but you may want to follow step-1 to prepare the right extract.

Step-1: Put a tea pan with water in it on high heat. Once the water is warm, add Saunth to it. Cover the pan and let it boil for about 2 minutes on high heat. Thereafter, lower the heat to medium-low and let it boil for another 7-9 min. We have now extracted most (in not all) of the medicinal powers from the powder. Technically, if you’d want to filter and drink it while it is hot, you are good to go. Unfortunately, it doesn’t taste much in this form and you may not continue for long. So, let’s make a tea out of it so that you’d readily consume it daily. Immunity doesn’t get build up in a day!

Step-2: Now, add tea leaves to this extract and let it boil for a minute or so. If you do not like milk in your tea, take it down, filter, add sugar to taste and drink it hot. Otherwise, it time to add milk. Let it sit on medium heat till it boils. Lower the heat and let it boil for another 2-3 minutes. Now, take it down, filter and add sugar to taste and drink it hot.

People who have strong seasonal allergies, cough problems, itchy chest & throat, and trouble breathing will find it soothing on a regular basis and will experience higher immunity to all these symptoms with prolonged & regular use of this tea. Excess of anything is bad. Saunth is hot in nature so do not consume more than 2 cups of tea on a given day. Reduce to just one cup in Summers. Everybody reacts to different food and spices in their way. Shall you feel excessive heat in your body nothing to worry, just consume more water (at room temperature)?

Rest in our next post. Stay safe and healthy always.
