Haldi-Drink

physical therapy in edison

Today we’ll discuss Haldi and how we can harness the power/properties that it is enriched with.

We don’t know an exotic name to this drink so we are keeping it simple; Haldi-Drink since Haldi (Turmeric Powder) is its main ingredient. For ages, Haldi has been used in Asian cultures (Ayurveda, traditional Chinese, and Unani/Greek Medicines), and it is known for its antibiotic, anti-oxidation, and anti-inflammatory properties. It is an important (and unavoidable) spice in any Indian kitchen. Today we’ll learn how to make Haldi-Drink that helps:

  • in cutting the mucus
  • keep our lungs clear
  • provide immunity (shield), and
  • help us recover from any internal inflammation

This in combination with the breathing techniques we shared in our previous post will help you improve your lungs' health. Ingredients:

  1. ¼ teaspoon dry Haldi powder
  2. 200 ml milk (regular or low fat)
  3. ½ teaspoon ghee (clarified butter)
  4. Sugar to taste

Note: Things to keep in mind; Haldi generates heat in the body, so to keep the balance we are using ghee & milk. Ghee and milk are cool and help neutralize the excessive heat produced by Haldi. There’s no substitute for ghee in this recipe. If you have other health condition that limits you to not consume ghee (clarified butter - trans fat), then skip this recipe, we’ll have other upcoming recipes to help you out. Alternatively, you can reduce the amount of ghee by reducing the quantity of Haldi. Try to keep the proportions balanced.

How to prepare Haldi-Drink?

Put an empty pan on low heat. Let the pan heat up a bit and then add ghee. Once the ghee is melted add Haldi powder to it and stir it with a spoon. Make sure the Haldi turns light brown only; as it will tend to go dark very quickly. Add milk to it and bring the milk to boil. Let it boil for about 2 min. Add sugar to taste (try with less or no sugar). Enjoy the drink while it is hot. Do not drink water or other drinks for about an hour. If you feel too thirsty and cant wait for an hour then drink hot/warm water only.

People who have existing cough or breathing problems will find it super comforting and energy booster.

Rest in our next post. Stay safe and healthy always.

  1. Can we substitute dairy milk with alternate milk? For dairy allergy

    • Tamali Saha Roy although we haven’t tried this with alternate milk options, it may be worth trying. The regular milk acts as a cooling agent so you may want to use only the alternatives that do the same. We would recommend that you try with half the amount of recommended Hadi quantity to start with as we do not know the nature of the alternative milk that you are going to use.

Keep a close watch to ensure that you aren’t feeling too hot. If so, consume warm to hot water to help neutralize any excessive heat.
